Lyon Arboretum
The Lyon Arboretum’s rare plant program is key to preserving and restoring the most rare and endangered of Hawaii’s native plants. The Arboretum uses tissue culture to store and to propagate plants, thereby increasing the numbers of plants available for restoration. Because it is the only such facility in Hawaii, it has become overcrowded and unable to respond to the increasing conservation needs of the state. Funds are allowing for construction of a new lab with nearly twice the capacity to store rare plants in tissue culture. Upon completion in 2013, visitors will be able to see the lab, its research activities, and other aspects of the facility via viewing windows and interpretive materials without entering the building. This provides a wonderful opportunity to engage visitors (including school groups) in the conservation efforts and needs of Hawaii.
