Maui Family YMCA

University of Hawaii

Founded in 1960, Maui Family YMCA proudly serves residents of the Valley Isle with programs designed to foster moral growth and build healthy spirits, minds, and bodies. Maui Family YMCA’s focus areas are youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, which it promotes through a diverse offering of classes and opportunities ranging from health, wellness, and farming/food sustainability practices to piano, ’ukulele, martial arts, swimming, ocean safety, and Parkinson’s fitness.

Maui Family YMCA’s afterschool music program aligns directly with the Cooke Foundation’s long history of supporting arts and education. This year, Foundation grant funds helped Maui Family YMCA run programs at Pōmaika‘i, Lihikai, Pu‘ukukui, and Ha‘ikū Elementary Schools, reaching more than 640 students. The second through fifth graders learned ‘ukulele and music appreciation, which introduced the keiki to different musical genres, famous composers, and a wide variety of instruments. The music program has become a central part of Maui Family YMCA’s afterschool programs, giving youth increased cognitive skills, stress reduction, increased self-esteem… and plenty of fun!
